Meet the Family
Freehold
Freehold is mischievous and affectionate, and the supervisor of all tasks.
She's the one at a party who makes sure everyone's having a good time. Even if it means a few things get broken...

Willow
Willow is self assured and has an almost elegant vibe (yet won't hesitate to throw a kick!)
She's the one at a party everyone admires from afar...until someone offends her and she throws her drink in their face.
Murphy
Murphy is sweet and affectionate, but being relatively new here, remains somewhat in his shell. Sometimes he wants to cuddle, and other times he acts like he doesn't even know you. We can't wait to see his true personality emerge! He's very bonded with Redbud and takes his role as her guardian pretty seriously (we have no idea why he thinks The Gangsta needs protecting...) He's the one at a party who you have an incredible exchange with, and then when you see him at the next party, he acts like he doesn't remember meeting you.
Murphy came to us very obese. He is sloooowly slimming down.
Boo Radley
Boo Radley was named after the character in To Kill a Mockingbird because initially he was misunderstood and outcast by the other equines. He has settled in quickly, and as he lets his light shine, would now be voted Most Popular (by himself anyway...) He's sensitive, super curious, and busy. Very busy. And he gives the best donkey kisses! He's the one at a party who greets everyone at the door, and makes them feel welcome. Then drinks too much and starts pinching butts and spilling his drink on everyone.
Boo came to us after being rescued from neglect. His hooves were severely overgrown and twisted (shockingly, x-rays indicate no permanent bone damage.) He was overweight, but is quickly regaining his figure.
Redbud
Redbud is the classic minihorse with a personality ten times its size. We call her The Gangsta because all she has to do is give a head nod to those two and three times her size and they scatter. She's still warming to us, so we don't know her true self yet.
She's the one at a party who hogs the buffet and dares anyone to say something about it.
She came to us with Lyme disease, anemia, and very shortly after arriving, colicked. We almost lost her, but our excellent vets at Virginia Equine (shout out "Uncle Shawn" Devaney!) helped us keep her alive, and she's now thriving
Scooter
Scooter is our latest family addition. When he was first rescued from a neglect situation, he was too thin and laden with parasites. After one month of being here, is well on his way to a healthy weight and feeling/looking good. He is a sweet boy and is puppy dog-like. He comes when called, follows us around and even "gives us his paw" when we clean his hooves! He's the one at the party who introduces himself and then follows you around like you came as a couple.
True
We named him that because we initially thought he was too good to be true. But, after many blankets were shredded, and shoes destroyed, we joked that we should maybe change his name to Regret or Chaos! True is rocking full on Lab energy-not an ounce of old soul in him. And he's got the sweetest spirit of any being we've ever witnessed. He has so much energy. He plays hard. He runs hard. And he cuddles even harder! He's the one at the party who's always at the best party he's ever been to. And when he finally leaves, it takes days to clean up...
Namee
Namee spent most of her life nicknamed RBC...Real Bad Cat. She was sweet as could be. Until she wasn't. And then there was blood and potential scarring. Thankfully, she's become a kinder, gentler cat as she's mellowed with age. She's the one at the party who thinks it's funny to hide behind something then jump out and yell, "Gotcha!" when people pass.
Macy Gray
MacyGray lives life out loud! She has very high self-esteem. Her two favorite things are cuddling and hunting in her yard (squirrels, lizards, snakes, and birds beware!) She's the one at a party who's in charge of games and entertainment. And singing. Lots of loud, off-key singing!
Bean
Bean is the quintessential chihuahua mix who's devoted to lap sitting. When there are no laps available, she enjoys playing with toys. She's also very passionate about policing the other dogs- hence her nickname "Deputy." She gets a lot of attention from strangers, and when she vacations with us, we feel kinda like we're traveling with a celebrity.
She's the one at a party who's dedicated to making sure she's having a better time than anyone else!
Bellabug
Bellabug is an odd-looking creature. We joke that she may be part chihuahua, part bat, and part spider monkey. She's super playful (she was once returned to her fosters for "playing too much with our other dogs" WTF, right?!) She's extremely sensitive and spends a great deal of time staring into our eyes. It's pretty weird and you don't really get used to it.
She's the one at the party who's always pausing her own great time to make sure everyone else is also having a great time.
Rabbi
Rabbi's transformation is miraculous. He spent the first half of his life feral, avoiding human touch. Now he's living with his guard down, luxuriating in all the affection and attention lavished upon him. He's the one at the party who almost didn't come. But is so glad he did!
